ExtensionsPress was born because I was frustrated with what I felt was a true transparency with extension stores, extensions, and reviews of them.
When we think about things like the App Store or Play Store we understand that these app stores have app review process methodologies they follow before approving something to appear on the store.
These guidelines have become stronger and better over the years with the reviewers looking deeper at the technical aspects of what an application does but much remains to be desired especially from the privacy standpoint.
Overwhelmingly the bulk of compliance with things such as privacy is mostly self enforced. While laws and organizations exist and protections have been created around privacy in all reality the bulk of enforcement and handling is still self completed and as such we have to blindly trust a company when they claim Data X is only being used for Y purpose.
Unfortunately with the large number of applications going in to a marketplace like the app store it becomes difficult to catch everything. The bad guys have been getting smarter as well and most rules are enforced to the best of each company’s ability but even then new methods to steal your information, hack your system, or leak privacy details do occur.
